We just ran the 41st edition of Mayor’s Cup — a traditional beach volleyball tournament held in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. On the third weekend this September, players and families descended on Rehoboth to play volleyball, eat boardwalk fare and bid farewell to summer. The farewell to summer bit might have been the reason this tournament was affectionately dubbed Last Rites by many returning players, referencing the First Rites of Summer fall edition. Years ago, circa 1985, Mid-Atlantic Volleyball (MAV) began publishing a regular newsletter that we shared with members of the Montgomery Volleyball Club (MVBC). The Service Line began as a two-page typewritten informational newsletter and contained volleyball stories, tournament results, clinic schedules and limited advertising. This article will feature information about the availability of beach volleyball at colleges in and near the Mid Atlantic region. As the sport grows nationally, it seem likely the availability of such programs will expand. However as will be detailed, only two local schools offer the sport at the NCAA competitive level.
